Freelance Freedoms – 5 Things Freelance Writers Take for Granted

happy-writing-man

Freelance writers are a fickle bunch. One minute, we are gloating about working in our pajamas, the next we’re complaining because we are stuck at home too much. It only makes sense, the freelance life is a complex one with many benefits and just as many drawbacks. When I am having a bad day and feeling like I may never reach the end of the workload, all I have to do is look at my freelance freedoms and I get that extra little burst of energy to get the job done.

Freedom From Horrible Bosses

Working a freelance job means that you often don’t work for the same client every day. This means that you aren’t stuck looking at the ugly mug of that same, annoying boss each time you go into the office. Plus, if there is a serious personality conflict, you can simply decline future work from the client—problem solved.

Freedom From Traffic

A freelancer usually doesn’t have to work from an office. I do 90% of my work from home, with the occasional trip to Starbucks to work while enjoying a delicious iced coffee and the sounds of the baristas talking about last night’s adventures.

Freedom From Pants

You knew it was coming. What freelance writer hasn’t enjoyed a nice “no-pants Tuesday” now and then? Working without pants is by far one of the best things about being a freelance writer and one that very few people with 9-5 jobs can appreciate.

Freedom From a 9-5 Schedule

As a freelance writer, sometimes it can be frustrating to become stuck writing at 10 PM or waking up at 5 AM to meet a last minute deadline. However, the opposite is true. Since we can have flexibility in our schedules, it is possible to make it out to eat lunch with the girls or go see a play at the elementary school. Flexibility is priceless.

Freedom From Boredom

The most important thing about freelance life to me is that I am never bored. I work for many different clients and tackle many different topics. There is simply no chance for boredom with a schedule as diverse as mine!

When my friends are complaining about their jobs and the stress associated, I just smile. Because while some days I might wish I had more regular hours or a benefits package, much of the time I am very content living the freelance life. Let freedom from the 9-5 grind ring!
