Madeleine was an editorial intern for CALYX, Inc. A publishing company established by women in 1976, CALYX publishes books solely by female authors. Additionally, its periodical, CALYX Journal, is published twice a year, and features art, fiction, essays and poetry - again, by women only. As female authors represent only twenty-five percent of the writing published by small presses, CALYX is an important journal that discovers "new writers and artists and present[s] their work in an elegant format" (statistic and quote from CALYX's website, http://www.calyxpress.org.) Several acclaimed writers, Barbara Kingsolver among the number, were first published in CALYX Journal.
Madeleine was an intern for CALYX for approximately seven months in 2014. She had the opportunity to put together reminders about upcoming writing contest deadlines for the email list serve. Madeleine also attended fiction editorial board meetings for the upcoming journal issue.
Having taken a feminist literary criticism class in college, reading Plath's The Bell Jar and Hemingway's The Garden of Eden among others, and having lived life as a female, Madeleine has developed an understanding of the impossible standards society puts upon women. She jumped at the chance to intern for CALYX. She holds opportunities like participating in roller derby as crucial for women to let loose, be who they really are in a sport that comprises only other women (and from all walks,) see society's expectations for what they are, and turn them around to use as an advantage - but only when they are needed.
