Rachel's primary specialty is grant writing, particularly nonprofit grant writing, though she is also adept in other areas of proposal writing and nonprofit communications, including blog, social media, and website content, executive summaries, advocacy letters, and more. She is also an experienced academic and research writer. She enjoys data-driven writing projects that allow her to combine analysis and interpretation with compelling storytelling, as well as making niche or technical topics accessible and engaging for wider audiences.
Rachel is a curious person who can find a way to be interested in almost any topic, but her writing has focused largely on literacy education, mental and behavioral health, LGBTQIA+ rights, life in academia, and disability justice. She has personal interests in fiber arts, arts and crafts more generally, dogs, cooking, comedy, and Pacific Northwest life, and she would enjoy the opportunity to explore these topics and more in writing.
Rachel has worked in and written for nonprofits throughout her career. Primarily, these nonprofits have been in the areas of education, arts, and mental/behavioral health care. Her most extensive nonprofit writing experience was as a grant writer for a large behavioral health care provider, where she also produced other nonprofit communications, such as social media and website content, advocacy letters, program summaries, and annual report content.
Rachel has spent much of her career in the world of education, as a student, an educator, and a writer. She has worked and/or studied at a small liberal arts college, a large urban Catholic university, urban and suburban community colleges, and a very large state flagship university. She has also worked with elementary school students, providing small group reading intervention. This breadth of experience gives her useful perspective on the education system and the needs of teachers and students, as well as familiarity with the practicalities of education at all levels. From academic writing at the graduate level to curricular activities for third graders or college freshmen to briefings and rationales for teachers, Rachel is able to write well for a wide variety of education-related purposes and audiences.
Rachel has approximately one year of experience as a full-time grant writer for a large nonprofit healthcare agency. There, she secured over $1M in funding and crafted at least a hundred proposals, applications, and letters of inquiry for a wide range of funders, including private foundations, corporate philanthropy programs, and local, state, and federal agencies. In addition, Rachel has assorted volunteer and coursework experience in grant writing for other types of nonprofits.
