Beth’s specialties are blog writing, report or article writing, and donor-facing content. She is particularly skilled at writing long-form pieces; leveraging research to strengthen content; distilling technical data into readable format; and telling stories to elicit a response. Beth also specializes in website content and script-writing for audio or video projects.
Beth's interests include yoga, hiking, reading (mostly historical fiction and biographies), game nights, comedy shows, the Office or Seinfeld reruns, trips out of DC, and playtime with two little ones.
On her bucket list? writing a book!
PhD in History, with concentrations in International Migration and Women and Race. Dissertation: "'Sadly We Feel the Effects': America's Civil War and Liberia's Struggle to Build Up a Nation."
Working in development and communications for various education nonprofits, Beth has developed and drafted content targeting diverse audiences and adapted to various platforms. She has designed and written newsletters and annual reports for both local and international nonprofits; created website content, crafted social media posts, drafted donor appeals and grant proposals; and researched and written dozens of blog posts.
Beth has extensive experience writing and editing in the nonprofit sector. In her last two communications roles, she was promoted to a senior-level position in less than a year, in recognition of her performance as a writer. She has written newsletters, annual reports, donor appeals and grant proposals, one-pagers and collaterals for prominent audiences including foreign governments and US Congress, Congressional testimony, talking points and speeches for high-level officials including Board members and CEOs, website content, scripts, and blogs.
Beth drafted her first blog post in 2013, as a requirement for a class she took her first semester as a doctoral student. She kept a blog for that class, posting weekly, and another a blog for that class's sequel. Since then, she has drafted dozens of blogs, covering various topics, for diverse audiences, and across sectors. This includes blogs for a law firm, for a nonprofit working to advance education in East Africa, for a global anti-trafficking organization, and for an industry leader in sustainability and supply chain services.
Beth has drafted dozens of newsletters for multiple organizations. These have covered a diversity of content and ranged in length and format (print versus digital). In her last communications position, she created the first organizational newsletter dedicated to research. This first edition was lauded by the CEO of a consulting partner as "the best I have ever seen by any organization."
During her tenure in both academia and the nonprofit sector, Beth has drafted dozens of case studies. Understanding the importance of case studies to "sell" bigger ideas, to simplify complex data, or to humanize programs or projects, Beth diligently pursues case studies as a means of strengthening and clarifying written content.
