My BA technical writing thesis, Biotechnology in the Wine Industry, drew comparison and correlation between the wine industry in France and California. It reviewed the history of blights and disease and the traditional methods used to combat them. It then investigated current issues facing the wine industry and considered the potential risks and benefits of biotechnology in the production of wine and disease prevention.
My MA thesis, Scientific Journals in the 19th Century, reviewed examples of scientific journals that were published in England over the course of the 19th century. It analyzed the interdependent relationship between three entities; science, people, and publishing. At the beginning of the century, the audience for these journals was gentlemen and amateur naturalists. Increased literacy made them available to the general public and the number of journals spiked with the added readership. However, by the end of the century, they were the domain of trained scientists specializing in newly defined disciplines. The journals, scientists, and science became more exact and rigorous as the century progressed.
