Douglas attended The Ohio State University on a full academic scholarship after graduating with honors from Mentor High School, winning numerous state journalism awards in the process. Douglas participated in the honors program at Ohio State until departing for the Outward Bound School in Washington State.
Douglas attended the Outward Bound School and participated in a mountaineering course in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State.
