John began at JMU as a chemistry major, but quickly found that literature and writing were his greater passions. After successfully completing his chemistry courses, he changed his major to English, alongside minors in creative writing and music.
John quickly became interested in several other areas of study, and took multiple courses in anthropology, philosophy, in addition to courses in literature, creative writing, and music. By his last year, John's academic writing interests centered around subjects in social justice (feminism, racism, imperialism).
John took his interests outside of the classroom and contributed to The Breeze, JMU's award-winning student newspaper, where he wrote about varying subjects, including music, social justice, law, and mental health. His articles were well-received locally and across the country.
John writes both creative essays as well as professional articles and blog posts about mental health, primarily anxiety and depression. Topics within this broad subject include dating (e.g., how to best support a partner with mental health issues), self-care, humor (such as the unique issues people with mental health issues face), among others.

John writes blog posts about prevalent industry topics, popular health concerns, health benefits related to specific products and ingredients, company practices, food ethics, and food and environment issues. John's blog posts are insightful, well-researched, original, and eye-catching. They build brand authenticity and authority, ultimately legitimizing brand image and expertise to consumers, regardless of content type.
