By his last year, John's academic writing interests centered around subjects in social justice (feminism, racism, imperialism).
John took his interests outside of the classroom and contributed to The Breeze, JMU's award-winning student newspaper, where he wrote about varying subjects, including music, social justice, law, and mental health. His articles were well-received locally and across the country.
John writes both creative essays as well as professional articles and blog posts about mental health, primarily anxiety and depression. Topics within this broad subject include dating (e.g., how to best support a partner with mental health issues), self-care, humor (such as the unique issues people with mental health issues face), among others.
