James spent 15 years in banking as a structured finance specialist for commodities and infrastructure clients. He worked in virtually every geographic region of the planet with colleagues and clients from around the world. During his banking career, much of his job required providing written explanations of the risk and benefits of complex financial transactions to clients, internal approvers, and ratings agencies. James saw a cumulative $20 billion of widely different transactions to completion during his career.

He also spent three years as an independent consultant to clients such as private equity firms, the World Bank, and USAID. During this time just wrote a variety of investment marketing brochures, presentations, due diligence reports, and proposals, most of which were prepared for non-finance specialists.

James S's Banking Industry Experience

2,008 Projects Completed

James worked in international banking for 15 years. During his career he was involved in a cumulative $20 billion worth of transactions such as project finance loans (including the first non-recourse project loan in China), mergers & acquisitions, securitizations, commodity derivatives, trade finance, leveraged finance, and asset finance. James served as a structured finance specialist for clients in the infrastructure, oil & gas, metals & mining, and agriculture industries.

Throughout his career, James consistently provided insightful and effective marketing presentations, internal approval memoranda, term sheets, and, in conjunction with legal counsel, complex legal documentation. He became particularly adept at distilling complex financial transactions down to their most essential elements for the benefit of clients and risk management approvers who did not have the requisite technical backgrounds to understand the transactions without explanation. James' preparation of written content for both marketing and risk approval was a major factor in the success of the transactions on which he worked.

After his banking career, James worked as an independent financial consultant to private equity clients and to World Bank and USAID projects. Presentation

1,001 Projects Completed

During his banking career, James prepared countless marketing presentations carefully designed to explain the benefits of highly structured financial products such as commodity derivatives, structured trading arrangements, securitizations, project and trade finance, physical commodity "repos," mergers and acquisitions, and transactions combining many of the above elements. As an independent consultant, James also wrote investment promotion presentations as part of his work with World Bank projects in Africa; presentations that were intended for both financial and non-financial audiences alike.

He takes a "less-is-more" approach to presentations, focusing in on the most relevant information needed to convey key points, but also appreciates that certain presentations are meant to be given in person, while others become a living document that will be left behind and read independently, often by people outside the original audience. As such, James takes extreme care to craft presentations for his clients that are specifically appropriate for the intended audience or audiences.

Grant/Proposal

1,001 Projects Completed

As both a banker and an independent consultant, James wrote many proposals to both internal approvers and to external clients. His proposals range from highly technical proposals for complex commodity derivative structures, including virtual derivatives built into physically settled commercial contracts, to export securitizations sold into the Rule 144A private placement markets, to development financing proposals aimed at sourcing an incremental $1 billion of financing for SMEs in an African country. In each case, James' value add has been to cogently and succinctly highlight the balance of risk and benefits of his proposals.
