Joe's writing career began at the University of Tennessee, where he taught freshman English classes while earning his master's degree. After graduation he went to work as a technical writer and soon landed a job with Martin Marietta at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). At ORNL he wrote and edited a variety of documents, including environmental impact statements, research and development reports, energy efficiency studies, environmental cleanup reports, transportation studies and more. Topics included hydroelectric power, nuclear power, waste management (chemical, radioactive and mixed), environmental remediation, plasma technology, chemical weapons, groundwater hydrology, waste characterization (including electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction topography, mass spectrometry, etc.) and many more.

After moving to Colorado in 1998, Joe worked first as general manager of a small telecommunications company then as project manager with an engineering firm. In both positions he wrote all the companies' business documents (e.g., business plans, marketing plans, fact sheets, proposals, reports, website, etc.) In 2003 he began freelancing as a writer, editor and graphic/web designer. Since then, he's written thousands of articles about topics ranging from water law and geothermal energy development to the bands performing at a major music festival. Joe is also contributing editor for an online arts and entertainment magazine.
