Joe studied electrical engineering for two years before changing his major to English. He minored in German but also acquired sufficient hours for minors in math and history.
Joe attended the University of Tennessee as a teaching assistant and taught freshman composition classes while studying English. He earned his master's degree after completing his thesis, entitled "Comedy and Modern Religion: The Process of Paradigm Interaction in 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'"
Joe wrote a weekly live music column for six years and is currently contributing editor for a regional music magazine. Joe also covered the regional arts and entertainment scene for a small daily newspaper in a Colorado resort town, which included writing feature stories about musicians and festivals as well as articles reviewing albums and performances. Prior to working for the newspaper, Joe wrote about traditional jazz and jazz musicians as webmaster and copy writer for the Evergreen Jazz Festival for twelve years.
Within a year of earning his master's degree, Joe went to work as a technical writer/editor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee. During the seven years he worked at ORNL, Joe wrote mainly about energy and environmental issues, including nuclear power plants, hydroelectric power generation, geothermal energy, environmental remediation, radioactive waste management, chemical weapons disposal, groundwater hydrology, environmental engineering, technology development, etc. He has continued to write about scientific topics as a freelance writer, including Western U.S. water issues, solar energy development, aquatic ecology and abandoned mine cleanup efforts.
Raised in a farming community, Joe has a lifelong interest in agriculture and has grown a substantial garden almost every year since graduating from college. In recent years, Joe's agricultural background landed him two significant jobs: general manager of a local food coop and cultivation manager at a licensed cannabis cultivation facility. For both positions, Joe wrote a wide range of documents, including standard operating procedures, white papers, proposals, advertising copy, web content, operations reports, etc.
Most of Joe's recent writing has featured articles published in magazines and newspapers. These include numerous articles about music performances, art exhibits, business, renewable energy, water issues, Colorado water law, agriculture, the environment and breaking news. Joe has also written book reviews and articles about food and beverages, science and technology, and Colorado lifestyles.
As a freelancer, Joe has designed and written content for hundreds of web pages. Topics include real estate, public lands, food and beverages, music, art, entertainment, acupuncture, Tai Chi, politics, religion and more. Joe currently works mostly on Wordpress websites, but he is also proficient working in Dreamweaver, GoLive and Muse.
