Since he spends a good deal of time on the water (see Interests), a considerable amount of Joseph's photography, video and writing is on maritime subjects. With the newspaper and online experience, however, he has spent a good deal of time on a wide variety of subjects ranging from military bands to Black Friday shoppers or whatever else his editor decided to aim him at.
In addition to writing, photography, video and art, Joseph is also a captain in the Merchant Marine and, as such, spends a good deal of time not just on his own (motley) fleet, but driving a variety of boats, large and small, for a variety of employers. Joseph has a number of years experience producing continuing medical education (CME) video for major medical clients, involving planning, scripting, filming and editing to produce a finished product. This work has involved location shooting all over the United States and Canada with many of the top experts in their fields.
Joseph has produced safety training films for the railroad industry, helping to script the same as well as directing actors, filming re-enactments and editing the final product for the company's use in training both new and experienced crew members. These have been distributed in direct-to-video form as well as via YouTube.

His experience includes everything from large-format film photography to aerial and underwater.

He has shot in a wide variety of formats from 8 and 16mm film to 4K high-definition video and done end-to-end post-production with most formats as well.
