Tekla completed both her undergraduate and master's degrees at the University of Regina. She majored in cultural anthropology, with minors in theatre and English literature. For her master's degree, she conducted fieldwork in Canada and the United States using participant observation. She spent one year in a community of alternative healing practitioners. Her thesis examined this practice through the lens of embodied personhood. She was nominated for the President's Medal for her thesis, Fragmented Bodies, Emerging Selves: Reiki journies and practice in South Saskatchewan.
