Derek holds a Bachelor's Degree in Communications from Rowan University. He draws inspiration from a wide range of professional/personal experiences and has written hundreds of articles for print and online media. In addition to an extensive background as an independent film producer/director, he has served as a tutor/reading coach for a wide age-range of inner-city students.

Presently he mentors middle- and high-school students in a downtown Los Angeles charter school. His catalog of articles features a diverse array of topics, including home improvement, gardening, personal finance, pets, and many more. His passion for writing, command of the English language, and unique sense of humor are important assets in his continued success as a freelancer. Besides writing articles, he has edited Venue Magazine, published short stories in multiple online and print journals, and, as part of the UCLA Extension Writer's Program, has been nominated for the James Kirkwood Prize for Writing.

Summary of Industry Experience


Derek produced/directed feature films for more than ten years. All of his films sold well in both domestic and foreign markets, and have been featured on the SyFy Channel, as well as the Chiller Channel. Derek has blogged on countless entertainment topics--everything from industry celebrity gossip to in depth movie reviews.


As a program leader for Alhambra Unified School District, Derek prepared and implemented daily lesson plans for over 22 middle-school students. On a daily basis he provided his students with tutoring, homework help, and enrichment activities. He worked closely with the school's faculty and staff to coordinate subject matter and educational themes. He has written and sold numerous articles about his experiences in education.


As a member of Americorps Derek organized and ran a literacy program for children who had fallen behind their peers in reading level. Derek tutored up to 12 students a day in one-on-one reading sessions. He worked very closely with these children's parents and guardians to make sure everyone was doing his or her part to help the children accomplish their goals. He has written and sold numerous articles on the subject of inspiring/motivating children.


As the humor editor of Venue Magazine Derek wrote and/or edited multiple articles for publication in print. He has a quirky, intelligent sense of humor, which has served his freelance writing well over the years. He has sold multiple humor pieces online and runs a popular humor blog with a steadily growing fan base.


Drawing from fours years of experience as a custom rail installer, Derek has written and sold numerous construction-themed articles to various online buyers. As an installer, he worked very closely with numerous craftsmen and building professionals, and has a thorough understanding of what goes into building a home from the ground up.
