With his healthcare and media backgrounds, Gavin has wide-ranging expertise. Most often he writes about mental health, marketing, technology, health and fitness.
Gavin's non-fiction books are about long-distance running, travel, and adventure. As an optioned screenwriter and published screenwriter, he can be highly creative and tasked with very unusual briefs.
As well as blog pieces, Gavin has turned his hand to product descriptions, landing pages, email drip campaigns, podcast summaries and more.
Ultrarunning is one of Gavin's major interests. His most audacious adventure saw him run 2300 miles from Paris to Istanbul. He can also wax lyrical regarding the thrills and spills of van life, thanks to that trip.
Gavin loves music and is learning, incrementally, to play the acoustic guitar. He is also developing an innovative board game.
Undergraduate degree
Postgraduate degree in Arts Management, including a placement at The List magazine, and a second placement at The Irish Writer's Centre in Dublin, Ireland.
Postgraduate Practical Film course with specialisms in Screenwriting and Directing.
Gavin worked for Campaign Screen, a monthly book and DVD containing the best commercials, music videos and short films worldwide. He helped launch this product and wrote copy for every issue, including short descriptions and longer articles. He also conducted video interviews and helped edit the DVD features on each issue.
During his time working for the NHS in administrative capacities, Gavin wrote instruction manuals for in-house software guides, and for process and procedure documents. He created copy for the corporate website and edited a multimillion-pound bid for new business (which his organisation, the Practitioner Health Programme won). He became knowledgeable about how mental health difficulties and addiction problems are experienced by doctors and other healthcare workers.
Gavin has written eight full-length screenplays, three of which have been optioned and one produced. He has directed four professional music videos and written/directed several short films screened at film festivals.
Gavin is currently completing the edit of a long-form documentary series about running the length of the UK, based on his bestselling book.
Gavin has written hundreds of blog articles for dozens of clients, including US realtors, UK translators, mental health clinics, marketing gurus and technology marketplaces. This is his favourite form of writing since it generally allows a little more freedom in tone and approach. That said, Gavin always follows any given brief with regards to style, tone and structure.
Drip campaigns, initial sales approaches and other forms of email communication are a preferred content type for Gavin. He enjoys the challenge of constructing a formal, quirky or informal approach to help clients reach and convert potential customers. This is a type of writing Gavin would like to explore more extensively.
Formal article writing, as opposed to blog writing, is one of Gavin's key skills. He enjoys constructing an argument, exploring a fascinating topic or summarizing a presentation (podcast, PowerPoint presentation or talk). He has written on topics as varied as breaking unconscious bias, no verbal variation clauses and the health benefits of lemon water.
Gavin has had two non-fiction books professionally published (including a book about his 2300-mile run from Paris to Istanbul). He is about to publish his third running-related book. Gavin is also the author of three novels and a collection of short stories. Among his ghost-writing projects were an 18,000 word eBook about running and mental health.
In the last two years, Gavin has worked with over a dozen clients to write product descriptions for ecommerce sites and online catalogues. Clients have included toy companies, novelty gift companies, cosmetics brands and software providers. Gavin enjoys the challenge of working within tight constraints.
