Bill Thompson has written widely on every aspect of travel, from urban adventures to wilderness basics. His explorations span 40 years on five continents, including 48 of the 50 U.S. States, and have produced more than 70 published articles. Apart from his travel writing, Thompson generates articles on the arts for the national print and online editions of Charleston Style and Design magazine, book reviews and author interviews for the national print and online editions of Kirkus Reviews and the Los Angeles Review of Books, as well as varied articles on books, film and the performing arts. His books include "Art and Craft: 30 Years on the Literary Beat" and the recent "Why Travel?" He is currently at work on a book on motion picture history. A member of the National Book Critics Circle, and a former member of the Southeastern Film Critics Circle and Southeastern Film Critics Association, he was variously a travel editor, arts writer, book review editor and film critic for The Post and Courier from 1980 to 2012. Earlier, Thompson was an all-purpose feature writer covering everything under the sun, a music columnist, and an award-winning sportswriter in Virginia and Florida, covering the National Football League and college basketball.

Bill Thompson covered the National Football League, National Basketball Association, University of Georgia football, Jacksonville (Fla.) University, Atlantic Coast Conference basketball, and small college sports of all kinds for the Newport News Daily Press in Virginia and the Florida Times Union of Jacksonville, Florida, during the years 1971-1980. He remains an avid sports fan and sportsman.
