The master’s in Latin American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin offered Patty an in-depth expertise on the Latin American culture and region.
The graduate program provided Patty with a solid grounding in social theory and qualitative research methods. Furthermore, the program provided her with a unique space within the university to work together with other students and faculty members on developing innovative approaches to studying and transforming learning and education, in the broadest sense possible.
Patty is a Professor and Chair in the Department of Bi-cultural-Bilingual Studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio. She is a recent recipient of the Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award (2017), which is given for excellence in undergraduate teaching; the award is the highest teaching honor in the University of Texas System.
For over two decades, Patty has worked with non-profits, schools, and research organizations, both in Texas and California, to improve the educational and economic success of Latinx immigrants in the US. She received her PhD in Social and Cultural Studies at the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2004. During this time, she was awarded a prestigious Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans. Prior to becoming an academic, she was a second-grade bilingual teacher in Houston, Texas, as well as an admissions officer at a private university, and a non-profit community worker.
Patty has a talent network that includes hundreds of skilled, industry-specific freelancers who have worked for top tech publications. She is a content developer and freelance technology writer. Her specialities include enterprise technology with an emphasis on cloud computing and IoT (Internet of Things). She has worked with clients such as GE Software, SAP, UBM TechWeb, and DICE.
Patty’s research centers on Latina/o immigrants and education. She is also the daughter of immigrants from Mexico, born and raised along the U.S.–Mexico border. Suffice it to say, her professional and personal experiences run the gamut in the arena of immigration and education—from local communities to public classrooms to university settings.
Patty believes that a good ad is one that is written and designed to emotionally connect with its target audience. To her, the target audience recognizes a need for it and feels a sense of urgency until the purchase is made. Nonetheless, this is all easier said than done and Patty has no vacancy for mediocrity.
