Deanna's interest in politics stems from her background in public policy, which she studied in graduate school to earn a Masters of Public Administration. She chose this course of study because she was enamored with the idealistic notion that public policy has the potential to positively impact peoples' lives. And while she still believes this, her extensive professional experience in government relations, steered her toward a more realistic view of public policy -- one in which altruistic policies to help those in need rarely exist on their own merits but are instead shaped and molded as they weave their way through the sticky morass of politics.
This experience means Deanna excels at analyzing policy implications that arise from political changes. She enjoys staying current on politics and is always eager to learn about new industries and the nuances of politics outside her region (Northeast Ohio).
Deanna has spent more than 15 years working in the nonprofit sector and has a thorough understanding of nonprofit management. Most recently, Deanna spent more than six years as part of the executive team of a complex nonprofit that included a 501 (c)(3), 501 (c)(6), 501e and a newly created foundation. As the spokesperson for the organization, it was essential that Deanna not only have a keen understanding of her industry but also the details of running the organization itself. Her peers often remarked that they appreciated her adaptability and eagerness to learn, which allowed her to regularly take on new and complex projects.
Her experience includes strategic planning, messaging, team leadership, government relations, board relations, fundraising, event planning, marketing and branding.
Deanna excels at writing creative, engaging blog posts that get noticed. She enjoys finding unique ways to tell a story and has a gift for making complex information accessible to any audience. Her blog posts have garnered attention from national healthcare market researchers, local speakers' bureaus and industry publications. Deanna enjoys the less formal tone that is often adopted by bloggers but is able to adapt her style to suit the preferences of her client. Deanna is also comfortable adapting blog posts for search engine optimization.
Prior to her freelance work, Deanna led the communications team of a complex organization, which included a nonprofit and a for-profit with multiple business lines. Public relations, including all aspects of press release creation, was a central part of her role. Over the course of her career, she has written and edited hundreds of press releases, ensuring, when appropriate, content was written for search engine optimization.
