Roy served for 15 years in the United States Army. His occupational specialties included Infantryman and Civil Affairs Specialist. His assignments required him to create lesson plans, cultural awareness briefings, and annexes for Army plans and orders. These assignments impelled Roy to develop exceptional communications skills.

Roy honed his writing skills while pursuing Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in political science. He traveled to Brazil in 2001, to conduct in-person interviews for his graduate thesis, "Afro-Brazilian Under-Representation in the Brazilian National Congress."

Following his military service, Roy has continued to develop his communication skills through work in instructional systems design, international development, social network analysis, and in-class instruction at the college level.
He also has experience writing and editing fictional novels.

Roy is insatiably curious about our world, and as a result has picked up skills in many fields, including electrical wiring, HVAC, sailing, scuba instruction, first-aid, and he recently published a guide to writing term papers.
