Ethan has written enthusiastically since he was a child, but on a professional level for the past eight years or so. In addition to plentiful research papers related to his college degrees in Wildlife Ecology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), he contributed to academic articles on wildlife-research studies he worked on during that time (wildlife-vehicle collisions, amphibian malformations, albatross mortality). He has also written for a newspaper in northeastern Oregon ("The Observer"), covering a variety of beats; Backpacker Magazine; the Bureau of Land Management; Wilderness.net, the federal information clearinghouse for U.S. wilderness areas; and many online publications, from USA Today's "Travel Tips" to Trails.com. Much of his work centers on natural history, ecology, adventure travel, and outdoor recreation.
