John obtained a bachelor of science degree from Indiana University Northwest in 1979 and returned to school in 1982 to obtain a master of science in business administration degree. He also holds an associates degree in carpentry from Ivy Technical College in Indiana and completed a four year apprenticeship with the International Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners.
John initially worked as an assistant editor at "Bank Marketing Magazine," a monthly publication published by the Bank Marketing Association in Chicago. He then went on to become the association's editor for its three newsletters, "Marketing Update," "Trust Marketing" and "Community Bank Marketing Newsletter."
John developed, edited, designed and wrote "On Center," a newsletter published by the Indiana University School of Medicine extension in Gary, Ind. The newsletter detailed developments at the center, including its creation of a unique curriculum within the medical school's statewide system, faculty profiles and biomedical research projects.
He also taught two writing courses at university campus in Gary as an adjunct faculty member.
John rewrote roughly translated text from Italian to English for use in printed promotional materials for the agritourism industry in Tuscany, Italy.
John wrote and edited three financial marketing newsletters published by a Chicago based affiliate of the American Bankers Association and two newsletters for an extension of the Indiana University School of Medicine.
John was a freelance business correspondent for a daily newspaper published in Northwest Indiana and contributed articles to an employee newspaper printed by the former Inland Steel Co.
