Education

Colorado State University

Liz completed two majors in the surprisingly overlapping topics of biology and performing arts. She was particularly interested in animal behavior, which requires not only precise observational skills, but creativity to generate hypotheses. On the theatrical side, she was drawn to costume design, which in addition to artistry, demands a conscientious attention to detail. Success in both fields required clear communication, whether that was in written lab reports, or in a theatrical design meeting.

Liz graduated with a 3.897 GPA and numerous scholarships and academic awards.

Syracuse University

Liz followed her love of science to pursue a Ph.D. in evolutionary biology. She focused on unraveling the evolutionary causes of extreme promiscuity in red flour beetles. In addition to countless hours running experiments and collecting data in the lab, Liz enjoyed communicating her science either through writing for scientific journals or speaking to scientist or lay audiences. She discovered that she liked the communication of science more than the experiments themselves, so decided to leave academia to pursue writing full time.

Liz wrote numerous successfully funded grant proposals and was awarded an outstanding dissertation prize following her defense.
