Caleen has been working as a professional geologist for over 30 years. All this work leads to a need for a lot of documentation; that means there were numerous reports and papers written. As she worked in a broad range of geological areas the writing took many forms. For example: property reports, often confidential, for clients; papers (sometimes reviewed) for publication; or a manual for general access posted through a website Online. The subject matters within earth science ranged from exploration for minerals to marine sediments and remote sensing.
During her career Caleen acquired expertise in the management and technical aspects of both field and data analysis projects. These projects included mapping, research and reporting as a part of exploration for a range of economic materials, from precious to industrial minerals. At other times work performed, for example, was preliminary for a national park assessment or analyzing data for abandoned mine databases / websites. Digital analysis has been an important part of much of this work including statistical analysis, inventory databases and GIS applications. Various forms of remote sensing were used in some of this work and is an area where she is working to expand her understanding and use.

specialties: coal geology, data integration and GIS work - including for historic geologic data, geologic data analysis, analysis and reporting on mineral exploration projects, mineral and aggregate mapping & potential, modern marine sediments - mapping & geochemistry, placer formation and heavy minerals

Caleen K's Technology Industry Experience

0 Projects Completed

For Caleen, with a career which spans between three and four decades, it would be pretty hard working in science not to find herself constantly needing to learn new technology. It usually turned out to be a great step forward and something exciting and interesting. An example is the use of remote sensing in geology, which has grown as in many sciences, as more sensors on satellites or planes, and now drones, have made data more easily available. The example below is a small excerpt of a manual she wrote in 2006 for a public GIS website (geological) which had newly added imagery from the ASTER sensor to the lengthy list of other data available on the site.

Specialties

Earth science, but she is definitely open to learning new things.

Interests

Caleen took a minor in history and has found it is hard to stay away from this subject. As soon as a subject has a historical slant it immediately becomes interesting (even when the subject itself may not be too engrossing to start with).

Education

Whitman College

Transferred to University of Alberta to do Geology.

University of Alberta

It was cold, but I survived.

University of Alberta

Required for Professional status.

University of Victoria, British Columbia

Modern marine sediments, heavy mineralogy and sediment geochemistry in northern Juan de Fuca Strait.

Caleen has worked for over 30 years in the field of Geology. She has worked in a wide range of areas from marine sediments to mineral exploration to remote sensing. Keeping up with changing technology and making the best use of it in whatever project she undertook has been a continuing theme in her work. The sample below includes the first two pages of a paper written by Caleen covering a research project while in progress. The paper was subsequently published in a technical journal.

Caleen has written an essay "The Inn at the Ford: the Riverside Hotel 1858 to 1927". This article focuses on the history of the site of the famous Riverside Hotel in Reno, NV. The writing form is conversational. The first three paragraphs are included below.

For Caleen, project proposals have been a regular start for many types of work, both in the private and public sector. She believes proposals are great vehicles to present what you think can be done and what you would like to do. She has found that sometimes people are really surprised by what their options might be. The excerpt below is the Executive Summary from a project proposal in 2014. The project was awarded to her.
