Kathy's greatest strength is editing informative and persuasive articles and blog posts. She also has edited and written ads, social media, graphics, web pages, press releases, newsletters, white papers, and novels.
Kathy has expertise in editing and writing about business, behavioral health (including mental health and addiction), and women's issues.
Kathy loves storytelling in all its forms, from chatting with friends and loved ones to books, TV shows, and movies. When not absorbing stories, she enjoys creating them. She's written nearly every type of journalism, poems, essays, short stories, novels, and TV scripts.
Kathy also feels strongly about improving our world and relieving suffering, and she volunteers much of her time to advancing those goals.
Kathy's education at Arizona State focused primarily on learning how to become a TV/radio reporter. While there, she interned at a public TV station and worked on the ASU radio program as both a reporter and an anchor.
Kathy also studied ethics in journalism, international communications, broadcast production, economics, statistics, and environmental biology.
Kathy studied four types of creative writing at Queens: poetry, writing for the stage/screen, creative non-fiction, and fiction. Her area of specialization was fiction.
The program involved extensive reading in all four areas of creative writing and lectures. The heart of the program was producing our own work and sharing it with classmates for mutual critiquing.
During her many years as a journalist, Kathy edited and wrote for:
-- a trade journal that covered the radio and TV industry
-- the business section of a daily newspaper
-- a business journal in a large U.S. city
Kathy understands the fundamentals of the business world and the importance of accurate and understandable information when it comes to enabling a business to thrive.
Kathy worked as a copy editor for a marketing firm that specialized in serving businesses in behavioral healthcare, primarily mental health and addiction treatment facilities. She edited blog posts, web pages, ads, white papers, graphics, newsletters, and press releases.
Kathy's work there went beyond standard editing. She was tasked with strengthening the writing, which ranged from minor adjustments to extensive rewriting and restructuring to create a product that was on-brand, concise, and effective.
Kathy created two award-winning special sections for women, one at a daily newspaper and another at a business journal. She wrote for and edited both sections.
The section at the daily newspaper focused on news for women in all areas of their lives. The business journal section focused on women in the workplace.
Kathy has edited all kinds of news articles, from breaking news to routine coverage to in-depth analyses. She's edited local, national, and international news stories. She also has extensive experience editing feature articles, including trend and lifestyle pieces, human-interest profiles, and data-driven stories.
Kathy's article editing is informed by her many years of experience writing articles herself, which enables her to collaborate effectively with writers.
Kathy has written and edited Facebook posts for more than a decade, both as a volunteer for nonprofits and as a professional working for a marketing firm. She has learned how to create posts that will grab the reader's attention and quickly convey the information needed to move the reader to action.
Kathy knows how to incorporate links and ensure the copy will work in tandem with the graphic/photo rather than overlapping it.
Kathy has experience editing a variety of blog types, including question-and-answer, narrative non-fiction (sometimes using fictional characters to illustrate a point), first-person, detailed list, informative, educational, and marketing posts. She has edited blog posts for authors, healthcare providers, and businesses, both for-profit and nonprofit.
Kathy recognizes that a well-done blog post does more than convey information -- it develops a one-on-one relationship with the reader to create a rapport that engenders trust.
Kathy has written and edited press releases for authors and a variety of businesses, primarily healthcare providers. She has also rewritten numerous releases produced by a press release writing and distribution service.
Having been a journalist on the receiving end of press releases for over 20 years, Kathy knows how to structure a release to not only capture someone's interest but also motivate them to share the news with their audience.
Kathy has edited newsletters for a variety of healthcare providers and a nonprofit. She has worked on both print and electronic/email newsletters.
Kathy knows a useful newsletter should impart brief snippets of information or entice the reader to click on a link to learn more about something. But despite their brevity, newsletters should be just as accurate as any other content a business provides to its customers.
Kathy worked for a marketing firm where she was responsible for editing a variety of ads, including Google ads, Google My Business ads, Facebook and LinkedIn social media ads, infographics, website landing pages, and white papers.
Kathy goes beyond simply editing advertising to correct errors. She works to ensure the copy is meeting the goals of conveying the brand voice, targeting the right audience, and moving the reader to action.
Kathy edited white papers while working for a marketing firm. A white paper is often very similar to a business profile, and Kathy wrote and edited many such profiles during her years as a business journalist.
Both the white papers and the business profiles she has worked on have often featured new processes, products, or services that required clear explanations for an audience unfamiliar with the product/service.
