Judy has written and edited others' work professionally for more than 15 years--first as a communications manager for national nonprofit and for-profit organizations--managing teams of writers/designers and writing/editing blogs, websites, articles, business plans, annual reports, presentations, marketing materials, and other content. She then continued writing/editing as a freelancer, with several of her former employers as her biggest clients. She is a 2020 law school graduate, where she specialized in public-service law, serving hands-on internships with organizations including the Legal Aid Society. During her internships, Judy wrote legal briefs to help her supervising attorneys represent vulnerable clients pro bono (at no charge), who would not otherwise have access to legal counsel. She also wrote many a paper in law school, both in "legal writing" and more conversational styles.

Specialties

Judy specializes in listening actively to clients, to ensure she understands their missions and organizational goals, writing/editing needs, audiences, intended messages, and the desired results. She is adept at synthesizing complex information on diverse subjects into easily understood, targeted content. Always timely and professional, Judy loves to learn about new topics and products, and her freelance clients know they can count on her to deliver the right words at the right time. Judy knows how much each word matters, and excels at absorbing clients' edits to her work and revising content to suit. She is equally comfortable developing long- or short-form content, from e-books and white papers to brief blogs or social media posts.

Interests

An avid reader since childhood, Judy devours e-books regularly, recently focusing on spy and detective novels. She also loves libraries and can often be found at her local branch perusing new literary offerings or writing for her own enjoyment or professionally. Her musings run the gamut, from her family group text, to social media, to a client's annual report. She also loves the outdoors and some of her best ideas take shape during daily walks through local parks and neighborhoods. Hiking with family and friends is a favorite pastime, especially near lakes, rivers or oceans--or mountains when she gets the chance. Judy loves to travel and learn about new places, cultures and history. She's not the greatest cook (her late husband was the family chef), but her daughters describe her as "an excellent eater" because she so appreciates the delicious food they make. She hopes to help make the world a better place, one word at a time.

Education

University of Wisconsin - Madison

Judy's undergraduate studies focused on languages, journalism and literature. She majored in French, but also studied Italian and German, and very much enjoyed her challenging courses. French Conversation and Composition, in which the class discussed and wrote about current events (en francais) was her favorite course and International Communication and the Foreign Press was a close second.

University of Phoenix Online

At a time when studying online was a relatively new way to learn, Judy earned her MBA degree, graduating with a 4.0 GPA, while holding a demanding full-time job and raising children. Her very supportive spouse was a great help, but it was an extremely challenging, although very rewarding endeavor.

Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law

Judy graduated from law school with a civil litigation concentration. During school, she was a staff editor of the Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice and wrote a Note (article) that was published in its pages. She was selected as a David Berg Public Interest Fellow and a Public Service Scholar, having focused her studies on advocating for vulnerable, marginalized people, fighting discrimination, and helping clients understand and assert their legal rights.
