Tips on Writing a Masterful Piece

If you write for a living, chances are things can get to the point where you feel as if there are no more ideas for you to develop, no more words for you to write, and everything seems as if you are writing the same thing over and over. When this happens, it’s time to reach back into the coffers and realize how you became such a proficient writer – it’s time to get back to writing that masterful piece and increasing creativity in your words.

Here are a few tips:

  • Don’t write the piece, BE the piece

Take the time to immerse yourself in the piece you are writing. When you take a vested interest in the topic you are writing about, you’ll have a better chance of making it meaningful.

  • Do your research

Even if you’ve written on the topic a number of times, there’s always something new you can learn. The key is in looking for new information in different places. Don’t use your same research methods; think out of the box!

  • Talk to someone

The power of conversation is real. It’s amazing what you can come up with after speaking to someone who can change your perspective. Maybe you need a different viewpoint on something. Talking about different topics can provide insight and get those creative juices flowing once again.

  • Just … write

Sometimes you have to will yourself out of your writing slump. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to JUST WRITE. Write about anything and everything that comes to mind. Writing on a number of random topics or just getting your thoughts on paper can assist in getting you back on track.

  • Food for thought

There are always things you can do to write masterfully. Good writing encompasses a number of elements. Here are a few more tips to consider:

  • Start by asking a question or telling a story.
  • Think about using the first, second or third person narrative to get a number of perspectives.
  • Try talking to yourself
  • Start at the end

These tips should be able to assist you in getting back to writing those masterful pieces you are known for. Take some time to clear your mind and get some things in order. You’ll appreciate the pieces you write a little bit more, and continue to be the gifted writer you are!
