Social Media Marketing World 2014 – A Marketing Writer Recap

social media marketing world 2014

If you are a business owner, marketing writer or someone who loves your Facebook or Twitter account, March 26, 2014 was a big day. The Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego played host to 2000 marketing professionals, members of the press and interested parties for Social Media Marketing World 2014. This event was billed as the “largest social media marketing conference.” That is a big name to live up to, and this event did not disappoint.

According to a Huffington Post article on the topic, over 2000 attendees made it out to this year’s Social Media Marketing World event, which was held on the 26th through the 28th. Those who were able to come had the chance to attend workshops and hear speakers on many different aspects of social media marketing. Moreover, there was a lot of fun to be had too! Toprankblog.com reported that there were, on average, six events or speakers occurring at any given time, so it was impossible for an attendee to be everywhere and see everything. However, as with any event social media related, there were plenty of reporters (and Tweeters) to update on what occurred.

Three of the events from Social Media Marketing World that were most memorable (and well documented) include:

  • Opening Night Mixer on a Naval Aircraft Carrier – In many ways, the social media world is a small world. This social event gave Tweeters, bloggers, Facebookers, press members and other attendees the chance to mix and mingle in a unique way. The opening event on the aircraft carrier inspired many to make connections that lasted through the event and well beyond.
  • The Speakers – The reason to attend a conference like this is to learn more about your craft. Social Media Marketing World hosted many of the “big names” in social media. Attendees could listen to speaking engagements from authors such as Michael Hyatt, Mari Smith and Amy Porterfield, attend events with the marketing directors of Fortune 500 companies and listen to ideas from some of the top marketers in the business. The list of speakers numbers in the dozens and is available in full on the official website.
  • Surfing? – All work and no play makes Twitter a rather dull place. As such, there were some fun events too. A surfing demonstration/class gave marketers a chance to unwind and learn more about one of California’s favorite sports.

Events like Social Media Marketing World are a great way for those in the know and those who would like to grow in the field to connect. While this is the biggest event of its kind, there are smaller social media conferences held throughout the year and around the world. As a marketing writer, my goal is to make it out to an event near me next year. Look out Digital Summit Atlanta 2015!
