Freelance Writing is an Art

553303793Have you ever wondered why people who can’t write always wonder what you do and how you do it? Let’s face it – the educational system leaves much to be desired nowadays, and good writing is a skill set that has diminished so much over the years that it seems to be a dying breed. What most people don’t realize is, freelance writing is an art. Just like an artist hones their craft, or a musician consistently practices, writers write on a variety of topics to stay sharp and focused.

Freelance writing is definitely one of those writing careers that is an acquired taste. Either you have it or you don’t; you love it or you won’t. While the term freelance makes people who don’t understand think writers have nothing to do all day, the rewards far outweigh the aggravation. Who can take a pen to paper or fingers to keyboard and flesh out 250 words in 15 minutes and not skip a beat? That’s like an artist stroking paint on a canvas, or a dancer practicing for their performance. You don’t think – you just do.

Every word, woven together like a beautiful quilt is like breathing life into projects that are being born. Like musical notes, each letter, word choice and thought process all come together in a symphony that is played by few. Good writing takes rational thought and a keen sense of what the client wants. That’s an intuition you can’t buy. If you had to put together a collage of all the specialties and expertise that lie within the freelance market, it would be staggering. Writing is more than writing a book, or developing content for someone else. Freelance writing is in your soul. It helps you thrive and makes you whole.

That feeling isn’t shared by many, but it doesn’t lessen the importance of good writing. Taking the initiative to follow your dreams and become the writing artist you’ve always wanted to be takes courage, and a mindset to success. Freelance writers understand, but the public may not – at least not yet. One day, the public will view freelancing as one of those professional writing careers that adds value. In the meantime, continue writing beautiful pictures – job well done.
