Susan specializes in writing about travel, particularly in the Midwest; interior design; residential gardening; photographers and their photography; artists and their art; and profiles of people, entrepreneurs and their businesses; and current shopping trends. During her journalism career, she covered the travel industry and convention and visitors bureaus, how local and state governments work, urban planning, and independent entrepreneurial businesses from family bakeries to technology companies.
From her other experiences as a grant writer and working in a university library, she knows first hand about the internal workings of 501(c) 3 not-for-profits and the internal workings of academic libraries.
She worked as a journalist for the past two decades and won three state press association awards. Her writing has been published in major newspapers, magazines, a national wire service and on websites. She has also written for private business clients and online content providers.
She particularly enjoys interviewing interesting people and encouraging them to tell their story. She has worked as freelance writer, beat reporter, staff writer, assistant editor and editor of various publications. She wrote weekly scripts for 60-second radio spots, grants for charities and currently serves on the board of a not-for-profit that publishes a literary journal. She has honed the research skills she learned as a reporter by working in an academic library where one of her roles is as a reference assistant. The knowledge gained from these experiences, coupled with her persistence, natural curiosity and resourcefulness, enables her to find the right source for whatever information she is seeking for any writing project.
Travel writing, grant writing, product descriptions, business writing, feature stories and straight journalism that requires digging for facts and finding the unusual angle.
Spending time with her family is Susan's favorite activity in her free time. They cook and bake together, play together and are currently working on an online magazine about kids, which will begin publication this summer. She is an avid reader, writes children's fiction, poetry and serves on the board of a poetry not-for-profit. She is an active member of the Writers Center of Indiana.
