Summary of Experience
Susan specializes in writing about travel, particularly in the Midwest; interior design; residential gardening; photographers and their photography; artists and their art; and profiles of people, entrepreneurs and their businesses; and current shopping trends. During her journalism career, she covered the travel industry and convention and visitors bureaus, how local and state governments work, urban planning, and independent entrepreneurial businesses from family bakeries to technology companies.

From her other experiences as a grant writer and working in a university library, she knows first hand about the internal workings of 501(c) 3 not-for-profits and the internal workings of academic libraries.

She worked as a journalist for the past two decades and won three state press association awards. Her writing has been published in major newspapers, magazines, a national wire service and on websites. She has also written for private business clients and online content providers.

She particularly enjoys interviewing interesting people and encouraging them to tell their story. She has worked as freelance writer, beat reporter, staff writer, assistant editor and editor of various publications. She wrote weekly scripts for 60-second radio spots, grants for charities and currently serves on the board of a not-for-profit that publishes a literary journal. She has honed the research skills she learned as a reporter by working in an academic library where one of her roles is as a reference assistant. The knowledge gained from these experiences, coupled with her persistence, natural curiosity and resourcefulness, enables her to find the right source for whatever information she is seeking for any writing project.

Projects By Expertise

I was editor of two weekly newspapers for a chain of suburban newspapers in the mid-1990s and then left there to become assistant editor of a monthly magazine that covered the not-for-profit community in a large city. Since then, I have written and edited scores of projects for publications, businesses and not-for-profits.

Projects by Writing Style
Authoritative

Susan has written numerous tutorials and fact sheets for websites. These are always written in the authoritative voice since their purpose is to give instructions. Yet, she always includes something light and interesting along with the information just so it's more fun to read.

Conversational

Some articles lend themselves best to the conversational style when the goal is to entertain more than to inform. The best articles in this style do both. Susan has written numerous features in this style that focus on an upcoming event or a destination in a travel piece. She has written them as if she is telling her best friend all about it over a cup of coffee.

Journalistic

Susan worked as a journalist for 22 years for newspapers, magazines and websites, serving as freelance writer, beat reporter, feature writer, news editor, assistant editor and editor of various publications.

Promotional

Susan has written travel pieces for USA Today, the Huffington Post, Travels.com, Golflink.com as well as for newspapers and magazines. Most of these articles promote a destination, upcoming events or new attractions.

For about three years, Susan freelanced regularly for the Indianapolis Business Journal, the business section of the Indianapolis Star, the business section of the Gary Post-Tribune and Hamilton County Business Views magazine. For each of these publications, she wrote feature stories and profiles on a variety of businesses.
