John began his career as a carrier based Naval Aviator with several deployments to the Western Pacific. After leaving the Navy in 1979 he became a Marketing Manager for the General Dynamics Electronics Division, charged with selling their lines of Automatic Test Equipment. He was hired by the Emerson Electric Space and Electronics division in 1982 as the Air Force Marketing Manager for Test Equipment. In late 1884 he relocated back to San Diego to become the Marketing/Sales Vice President and Principal Owner of a startup microelectronics company named CTM Microelectronics.
In 1987 John accepted a position as the Western Regional Sales Manager for Loral Instrumentation, a key supplier of Avionics and Telemetry test equipment. He joined The Systems Engineering and Management Company (SEMCO) in 1990 to oversee their efforts in the Custom Test Equipment and Engineering Services business and managed their acquisition of a small Telemetry products company in 1993. In 1994 John joined Seven Bar Systems (SBS: NASDAQ) as Corporate VP for Development and as Operations VP for Berg Systems, a subsidiary of SBS located in Carlsbad, California. He became President of Berg Systems in 1996 where he worked until late 1999.
In 2000, John founded Lumistar, a high technology supplier of ground telemetry products for flight test and satellite applications in Carlsbad. He continued as founder and CEO of Lumistar until his retirement in 2013, having sold the company to Kratos Defense and Security Solutions (KTOS:NASDAQ) headquartered in San Diego, California.
